Fire Prevention Week Centenary
Fire Prevention Week 100 Years (1922 – 2022)
This year marks the 100th year of Fire Prevention Week. To celebrate this particular date, we are going to show you the importance of this date.
The Great Chicago Fire
Have you ever heard about The Great Chicago Fire in 1871? One of the saddest stories of our nation is the fire disaster in Chicago City, Illinois. Approximately 300 people died from the fire catastrophe on that October 8-10. The city was engulfed in flames, and the fire destroyed over 3.3 square miles and 17,000 buildings, and more than 100,000 citizens were left homeless during those three days of fire.
The lack of security caused concern for the American people. From that date on, fire precautions drastically increased. Later, our Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA) was created to secure that cities, governments, and people would take fire prevention to another level.
What Is This Week About?
Fire Prevention Week is a national celebration that connects our community with the fire department on behalf of fire protection. Each year, during the week of October 9-15, we celebrate in memory of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. This date was established in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and for the centenary, the official theme is: “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape.”
This week is very important to raise social awareness of the importance of fire precautions. It’s a great opportunity to show some fire prevention plans, such as Fire Alarm Systems, Evacuation Plans, and home security. NFPA cares about people’s safety, using Fire Prevention Week as part of social and cultural worry to avoid risks to our lives.
The Importance Of Fire Prevention
After the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, fire precaution has been growing in our country as people prioritize it for home and building security. In 1922, NFPA created this date to inform and teach citizens about fire protection, and October was chosen as a homage to Chicago. Since then, 100 years have passed, and a different theme is used as a subject every year. That’s why Fire Prevention Week is so important to our culture.
